Sonam Wangchuk: The Man Who Found a Future in “Failed” Students

Sonam Wangchuk’s story is not merely the story of an educationist; it is the story of a man who changed the meaning of a single word.

Born in a remote village in Ladakh, he completed his education through determination and hardship.

Along the way, he met countless students who had repeatedly failed school examinations. What surprised him was that these children were no less intelligent than anyone else.

This led him to ask a fundamental question: If the children are capable, then who has really failed, the child or the system?

That question inspired the establishment of SECMOL in 1988. It was not simply another educational institution but an experiment in reimagining education, where ability mattered more than examination scores.

Students whom the conventional system had labelled as failures were welcomed there. Many of these young people later went on to build solar energy projects, construct environmentally sustainable buildings, develop ice stupas to address water shortages, and create practical solutions to the real challenges faced by their communities.

Wangchuk’s philosophy is simple yet profound: the purpose of education is not merely to accumulate information, but to enable individuals to become valuable contributors to society. An education that fails to connect children with their land, their language, their culture, and their environment remains incomplete.
Sonam Wangchuk reminds us that every child whom the system has labelled as a “failure” is not necessarily unsuccessful.

More often, the problem lies not in the child but in the yardstick by which we attempt to measure human potential.
