Story No. 4: The First Nerve Center

In the previous episode, we saw that evolution took a remarkable step forward with the emergence of nerve cells, or neurons.

Thanks to these cells, information could travel rapidly throughout the body. News of danger, food, or changes in the environment could now reach different parts of an organism within moments.
But a new problem soon appeared.

As the number of nerve cells increased, so did the flood of information. Messages arriving from different parts of the body began to compete with one another.

The question was: who would organize all this information?

A simple example can help explain the problem.
Imagine a city where thousands of people are constantly calling one another, but there is no central office or control room. Chaos would soon follow. In much the same way, an early nerve network eventually became insufficient.

Evolution responded with another important innovation.

Some nerve cells began to gather together in one region of the body. These cells collected incoming information, compared different signals, and then issued appropriate responses. This was the first nerve center, the evolutionary foundation from which brains would later develop.

A fascinating example of this stage is the planarian, a small flatworm that lives in water. It possesses two small clusters of nerve cells that function much like a primitive brain. This allows the animal to distinguish between light and darkness, avoid obstacles, and move toward sources of food.
Compared with the human brain, this was an extremely simple system. Yet for evolution, it represented a tremendous achievement.

For the first time, information was not merely being transmitted—it was being gathered in one place, processed, and acted upon. In a sense, the body had established its first “central office.”
But evolution still had more surprises waiting.

If such a small nerve center could accomplish so much, what might happen if it became larger, more complex, and more powerful?

That question pushed evolution toward its next great milestone:
The Emergence of the First Primitive Brain.
