The Hidden Connection Between the Gut and the Brain

Have you ever noticed that shortly after having a light breakfast, you begin to feel a strange sense of restlessness, fatigue, or irritability?

At first glance, it may seem like a trivial matter—but behind it, a remarkably fascinating system of your body is at work: the hidden connection between the gut and the brain.
Science tells us that our intestines are home to trillions of bacteria, collectively known as the microbiome. Not all of these bacteria are harmful; in fact, many of them are beneficial. They not only help in digesting food but also produce chemical substances that influence our brain.

For example, a large portion of serotonin—the chemical associated with happiness and calmness—is produced in the gut.

Similarly, an important pathway called the vagus nerve continuously carries messages between the gut and the brain.
When we include probiotics in our diet—such as yogurt, lassi, and fermented foods—these beneficial bacteria become stronger. This not only improves digestion but also has a positive effect on mental calmness, focus, and mood.

On the other hand, an imbalanced diet or excessive consumption of processed foods can disturb this balance, which in turn affects our mind.

It begins to feel as though our thoughts are not formed solely in the brain—but that their roots, in some way, also lie within our gut.
