Who Is Truly Educated? From Thought to Industry

According to the renowned British philosopher John Locke, the true purpose of education is not merely to accumulate information, but to cultivate the ability to think.
He emphasized that education should enable a person to question, to evaluate arguments, and to distinguish between fact and assumption. If education remains confined to memorization and exam scores, it does not liberate the mind; rather, it confines it within narrow boundaries.
A genuinely educated person is one who can think critically, who does not blindly follow others’ opinions, and who makes decisions based on reason and awareness.
Critical thinking grants intellectual independence. Instead of being swept away by rumors, prejudices, and misinformation, such a person pauses and reflects. This ability empowers individuals to make better decisions in personal life, social matters, and professional fields. In this sense, education makes a person truly empowered. One does not merely possess knowledge but also understands how to use it wisely.
However, in today’s China, the concept of education is entering a new phase. For example, some Chinese universities have introduced a new trend at the doctoral level, where a PhD is no longer limited to a lengthy research dissertation. In certain fields, doctoral degrees are being awarded to individuals who produce practical innovation in industry — those who develop inventions or solutions that bring tangible benefits to society and the economy.
In this model, alongside an academic supervisor, an industry supervisor is also involved, ensuring a strong connection between knowledge and practice.
This trend reflects the expanding meaning of being educated. It is no longer sufficient merely to think correctly; it is also necessary to translate thought into action.
Thus, modern education appears to stand on two pillars: the maturity of awareness and character, and the practical and social application of knowledge.
A truly educated person is one who thinks clearly and transforms that clarity into outcomes beneficial to the world. This is the education of the future — a beautiful harmony between the light of the mind and the effectiveness of action.
